Evolving into a more hunched form, Coronatox looks positively unwilling to befriend anything. It has jutting eyes and a ridge over them that gives it a permanently angry or insidious expression and a tongue that lolls about from the side of its mouth as it tastes the air for prey. It has hefted up some, giving it a fair deal more muscle and pomp than Poisoma. Coronatox has also evolved a fair pair of claws on its strong-armed forelimbs, giving it additional defensive measures beyond its poisonous nature to ward off predators and to scoop up unwitting prey. Lastly, it has gained a set of ridges along its back, settled over its purple stripes and owning the same hue as the stripes themselves.

Etymology: Coronatox is a combination of the words corona and toxin.

Gender Differences: None.

Special Abilities: It secretes a toxic mucus. Alkaloids in the skin glands of Coronatox serve as a chemical defense against predation, and they are therefore able to be active alongside potential predators during the day.

Behavior: Coronatox are dedicated parents and carry their newly hatched Poisoma into the canopy of the rainforest; the youngsters stick to the mucus on the backs of their parents. Once in the upper reaches of the rainforest trees, the parent Coronatox deposit their young Poisoma in the pools of water that accumulate in epiphytic plants, such as bromeliads. The Poisoma then feed on invertebrates in their nursery, and their mother will even supplement their diet by depositing eggs into the water. Other Coronatox lay their clutches of Poisoma on the forest floor, hidden beneath the leaf litter. Both males and females frequently engage in disputes over territory. A male will fight for the most prominent roosts from which to broadcast his mating call; females fight over desirable nests, and even invade the nests of other females to devour competitor's eggs.

Habitat: Natural habitats include subtropical and tropical, moist, lowland forests, subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland, subtropical or tropical, moist, mountains and rivers, freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marshes, lakes and swamps. Other species can be found in seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, arable land, pastureland, rural gardens, plantations, moist savanna and heavily degraded former forest. Premontane forests and rocky areas have also been known to hold frogs.

Diet: Coronatox subside mostly off of invertebrates and foliage. In particular, they favor ants. It is argued that Coronatox do not synthesize their poisons, but sequester the chemicals from arthropod prey items, such as ants, centipedes and mites, as such, a diet-toxicity hypothesis. Because of this, captive-bred animals do not possess significant levels of toxins as they are reared on diets that do not contain the alkaloids sequestered by wild populations. In fact, new studies suggest that the maternal Coronatox lay unfertilized eggs, which are laced with trace amounts of alkaloids, to feed Poisoma. This behavior shows that the poisons are introduced from a very young age.
