A small frog no bigger than most starting Pokémon, Poisoma are base tan in color with bright purple features across their body and large yellow eyes. Their head sits atop a rather small and wobbly neck and they scuttle about on all fours, though they can stand on their hind legs kind of hunched over if they need to use their small tan hands. Purple stripes run across their back, deterring predators by letting the world know their poisonous nature. A small stubby tail juts out from behind them. Lastly, their tongue and inside of their mouth is also a bright purple, and scientists seem to think that this comes from their diet of venomous ants, which stain the flesh of their digestive tract a poisonous color.

Etymology: Poisoma is a combination of the words poison and -oma, the suffix relating to tumors.

Gender Differences: None.

Special Abilities: It secretes a toxic mucus. Alkaloids in the skin glands of Poisoma serve as a chemical defense against predation, and they are therefore able to be active alongside potential predators during the day.

Behavior: Coronatox are dedicated parents and carry their newly hatched Poisoma into the canopy of the rainforest; the youngsters stick to the mucus on the backs of their parents. Once in the upper reaches of the rainforest trees, the parent Coronatox deposit their young Poisoma in the pools of water that accumulate in epiphytic plants, such as bromeliads. The Poisoma then feed on invertebrates in their nursery, and their mother will even supplement their diet by depositing eggs into the water. Other Coronatox lay their clutches of Poisoma on the forest floor, hidden beneath the leaf litter. Poisoma are inquisitive animals, venturing from tree to tree in search of friends and food.

Habitat: Natural habitats include subtropical and tropical, moist, lowland forests, subtropical or tropical high-altitude shrubland, subtropical or tropical, moist, mountains and rivers, freshwater marshes, intermittent freshwater marshes, lakes and swamps. Other species can be found in seasonally wet or flooded lowland grassland, arable land, pastureland, rural gardens, plantations, moist savanna and heavily degraded former forest. Premontane forests and rocky areas have also been known to hold frogs.

Diet: Poisoma subside mostly off of invertebrates and foliage. In particular, they favor ants. It is argued that Poisoma do not synthesize their poisons, but sequester the chemicals from arthropod prey items, such as ants, centipedes and mites, as such, a diet-toxicity hypothesis. Because of this, captive-bred animals do not possess significant levels of toxins as they are reared on diets that do not contain the alkaloids sequestered by wild populations. In fact, new studies suggest that the maternal Coronatox lay unfertilized eggs, which are laced with trace amounts of alkaloids, to feed Poisoma. This behavior shows that the poisons are introduced from a very young age.
